Travis McMicheal, one of three white supremacists who lynched Ahmaud Arbery received a life sentence plus ten years in prison after being convicted earlier in the year of attempted kidnapping and the federal hate crime of interference with rights.
McMichael’s father, Gregory and neighbor William ”Roddie” Bryan, who also received life sentences on identical charges. The racist trio are already on life sentences for convictions in Georgia state court on a series of charges related to Aubrey’s death, including felony murder.
On February 23, 2020, Arbery offended the McMichaels and Bryan’s racist sensibilities by jogging past their home, prompting these killers to take up arms chasing the 25-year-old brother in two separate pickup trucks. Bryan even recored the video of Micheal shooting Arbery with a shotgun.
The McMichaels attempted to sell a story to authorites that Arbery was a burglar; a subsequent investigation throughly debunked those claims.
In January, Georgia state superior judge handed down life sentences for all three males without the possiblitly of parole for the McMichaels.
The murderous McMichaels have filled court paper to circumvent normal protocol, which would place them in the custody of the Georgia Department of Corrections to serve their terms in state prison, to send them to federal prison, citing they do not feel like they will be safe in Georgia prison system that is currently under investigation by the Justice Department over inmate-on-inmate violence. However Arbery’s family asserts that the killers should serve their time in a state facility, contending that a federal prison would be as tough.
The McMichaels and Bryan could be subject to additional life terms and steep fines for the federal convictions.
